THE IMPELLER HAS FALLEN OFF THE INTERNAL METAL SHAFT, AND THE SHAFT THREADS HAVE BEEN CHEMICALLY ATTACKED. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

Our standard 303 stainless-steel Shaft for all Flo King pumps is covered with Teflon heat-shrink tubing. In most cases, this works well, but when there is a failure, it almost always occurs when aggressive acids attack the stainless-steel Shaft where the Impeller screws onto the Shaft threads. This may happen because of (1) pinholes or other imperfections that develop in the Teflon coating, (2) wear and tear over time, or (3) objects that are sucked into the pump and damage the Teflon heat-shrink tubing.

WHEN TO CONSIDER ALTERNATIVE SHAFT MATERIALS (TITANIUM & HASTELLOY)
If a solution is known to aggressively attack stainless steel, a titanium or Hastelloy shaft (or shaft tip) is strongly recommended instead as a precaution. There is an extra charge for these materials.

• Typical Titanium Shaft Applications: Hard chrome plating (non-fluoride type), chromic acid etch, acid tin plating, sulfuric acid anodizing, acid copper plating (sulfuric).

• Hastelloy C276 is a nickel-chrome-molybdenum-tungsten alloy that has better resistance to fluorides than does titanium. In most cases, however, we have to rely on the customer to tell us if the solution attacks both stainless steel and titanium before we quote Hastelloy. The customer or chemical supplier often knows if the solution attacks these metals and it is his responsibility to make the proper selection.

LAB SERIES
The Lab Series is available only with the standard stainless-steel shaft covered with Teflon heat-shrink tubing.

TITANIUM SHAFT FOR BX650
A complete Titanium Shaft is available for the BX650 in all pump-body lengths — 4, 6, 8, and 10 inches. There is an additional charge for titanium shafts.

TITANIUM SHAFT FOR THE BX1200
A complete Titanium Shaft is available for the BX1200, but only in pump-body lengths of 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 inches. The reason is that titanium is very lightweight and it is not possible to reliably balance and maintain alignment of longer Shafts. There is an additional charge for titanium shafts.

HASTELLOY C276-ALLOY SHAFT FOR THE BX650 AND BX1200
A complete Hastelloy C276-Alloy Shaft is available for the BX650 and BX1200 models in all pump-body lengths except 4 inch. There is an additional charge for Hastelloy shafts.

TITANIUM-TIP SHAFT FOR BXL2500, BX3000, BX5000 AND BXL5000.

• Rather than a complete titanium shaft, we use a titanium-tip shaft for these models. One end of the tip is threaded onto the stainless-steel shaft and the other end onto the Impeller, providing protection at the most vulnerable area. The Impeller Insert must be made of the same material as the Shaft.

• A Titanium-Tip Shaft is available for the BX3000, BX5000, BXL2500 and BXL5000 in most pump-body lengths. There is an additional charge for titanium-tip shafts.

HASTELLOY-C276-ALLOY-TIP SHAFT FOR BXL2500, BX3000, BX5000 AND BXL5000

• Rather than a complete Hastelloy shaft, we use a Hastelloy-tip shaft for these models.

• A Hastelloy-Tip Shaft is available for the BX3000, BX5000, BXL2500 and BXL5000 in most pump-body lengths. There is an additional charge for Hastelloy-tip shafts.
